CALABAR, CROSS RIVER STATE — A Deputy Superintendent of Correctional Service, Michael Apepende, has died following a heavy downpour and flooding in Calabar, the Cross River State capital.
The incident occurred after a midnight downpour on Thursday, August 27, 2026. According to reports, Apepende was swept away by floodwater along Barrack Road, near the State Newspaper Corporation, in Calabar.
His body was recovered from a drainage channel on Friday morning.
The Cross River State Police Command confirmed the recovery of a male adult from a drainage channel along Barrack Road at about 10:30 a.m. on Friday, August 28.
The police identified the deceased as Deputy Superintendent of Correctional Service Michael Apepende, a personnel of the Nigerian Correctional Service.
According to the police, officers from Akim Division responded to the scene after receiving information about the incident and recovered the body.
The body was subsequently taken to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital for an autopsy to assist in establishing the circumstances and cause of death. Police said the incident remains under investigation and urged members of the public to avoid speculation.
The latest tragedy comes amid continuing concerns over flooding, erosion and landslides across parts of Cross River State.
Earlier in July, the Cross River State Government ordered immediate intervention following flooding in parts of Calabar and warned against building on drainage channels.
The Nigerian Red Cross Society has also activated a flood-preparedness operation in Cross River State following warnings of increased flood risks during the 2026 rainy season.
