At a time when economic hardship and widespread dissatisfaction with the ruling APC have influenced how many Nigerians view its politicians, it is understandable that party affiliation can shape public perception. But should an individual be judged entirely by the party platform on which he seeks to serve?
For many supporters, Richard Romanus for Obubra deserves to be considered on his own merits—his relationship with the people, his accessibility, his commitment to the constituency and the practical steps he has taken to support communities.
His intervention for farmers in Obubra II, including the distribution of herbicides to ease some of the challenges faced by local farmers, is one example of the grassroots engagement associated with him.
The argument, therefore, is not that people should ignore the realities surrounding the APC. Rather, it is that those realities should not automatically prevent an individual from receiving a fair opportunity to prove himself.
Richard Romanus for Obubra should be given a chance to demonstrate what he can offer—not because of the party he represents, but because of the person, leadership values and commitment he brings to the people.
For his supporters, this is the reason his emergence has generated hope: the belief that Obubra II can look beyond party labels and give an individual the opportunity to earn the people's trust through service, accessibility and tangible action.
Ultimately, the people of Obubra II will make their own judgment. But before that judgment is made, supporters believe Richard Romanus deserves to be given a fair chance to show what he can do.
